An Interview with Positive Addiction
In the build up to the release of Never Gonna Fall, we will be catching up with some of the remixers featuring on the release. First in the spotlight is Steve Gietz (aka Positive Addiction) who took time out of his busy day to answer some of our questions.

Where are you based?
I live in the Austin, Texas area.
What is your musical setup?
It's a fairly simple setup. A desktop PC, MIDI controller, studio monitors, and headphones. That's about it.
What programs/equipment do you use and why?
Specifically I'm using Sonar X1 as my main sequencer. When I was looking for a DAW, Sonar was the only one that had a free demo and didn't require specific hardware. I downloaded it, learned it, then bought the full version. I never switched. It may not be the most popular DAW for EDM, but it gets the job done, and I know it inside and out. I also have an Oxygen 49 MIDI controller. It was affordable and does everything I need. A Kontrol 1 audio interface. After several fails with interfaces on Win 7 64-bit, this one made the cut. It's rock solid and sounds superb. KRK Rokit 8 monitors. Some people love them, some people hate them. In the end they work for me. It's all about learning your monitors in your environment. A pair of Q701 headphones. I use these for reference, since I don't have room treatment. I try to find a good balance between the cans and the monitors.
I find myself using the same set of synths on most projects, which include Battery for drums, Dimension Pro, Massive, Predator, and Kontakt. I also recently purchased JP6K, which just sounds phenomenal. It has a place in most of my new projects now.
How long have you been producing music for?
I always tinkered around since Reason came out, but I've only been serious about it for a little over a year now.
What first got you into music?
I've been a huge music fan since I was a little kid. There really wasn't one defining moment. I always wanted to do something with music. I used to DJ in my late teens to early twenties, and that gradually evolved into producing my own stuff.
What are your favourite artists / influences?
Really anything has the potential to inspire me. I could randomly browse music on sites like Beatport and Youtube, come across something I never heard before, and be inspired by it. As far as favourite artists, this one is always difficult to answer! My favourite artist(s) are in a constant state of flux, ever changing. Currently I'm really enjoying the Chillwave movement, specifically the artist "Washed Out."
What is your biggest success so far musically?
I have entered several remix comps over the past year and consistently ended up in the top 3. I won several times, but this one is probably my biggest success so far. I'm also in talks with a label about releasing some of my original tracks. Things are looking up.
What are your future plans/ambitions?
I'm not sure I want to make a full-time career out of music, although if the opportunity arises, I will strongly consider that option. In the meantime I really enjoy the creative process that goes into producing/remixing. It's a lot of fun (sometimes frustrating when software doesn't play nice!). I'm always on the lookout for a good remix opportunity. I just love the idea of giving my own interpretation to an existing track, but as I mentioned, I'm in the process of getting some original music released. I would like to focus on that a little more.
What other projects are you working on at the moment?
I have experimented with a lot of different genres over the past few months, such as Ambient, DnB, Lounge, Trance, Deep House, etc. It helped me tremendously in trying to find my own sound. I can only recommend it to anyone who just started producing. I keep going back to a certain sound that's sort of in-between progressive and deep house, and I'm working on a few tracks in that genre for the label.
What attracted you to remix Never Gonna Fall?
I liked the lyrics and general vibe of the track. I really enjoyed working on it. It's a great track and should do very well on EDM charts!
